About Olds Research

Olds Research is an independent analysis effort focused on HPC/AI systems and data center technologies.

We’re examining what we call the “Perfect Storm” heading toward data centers—driven by AI, increasing power demands, and the need for more efficient infrastructure and operations.

The goal is simple: understand what actually works.

That means focusing on real systems, real workloads, and real constraints—power, cooling, utilization, and cost—not just how things are described in presentations.

About Dan Olds

Olds Research is led by Dan Olds, a longtime industry analyst with more than 25 years of experience in high performance computing and data center technologies.

Over that time, he has worked with vendors, end users, and research organizations across the HPC ecosystem, focusing on system design, performance, and how large-scale computing environments actually operate.

His focus has consistently been on understanding how complex systems behave in real-world environments—not just how they are designed or described.

His work has appeared in publications including HPCwire, The Register, and InsideHPC, and he has been closely involved in the Winter Classic Invitational Cluster Competition (and others).

Approach & Methodology

Views here are formed through direct experience, conversations with vendors and end users, and what’s actually happening in the field—not just what’s presented publicly.

The focus is on system-level behavior—how infrastructure is designed, how workloads perform, and how efficiently resources are used.

This is not a comprehensive survey of every technology or vendor. It is a curated view of what is technically credible and relevant to real-world deployments.
